Neck and Shoulder Pain The neck is clearly a vital component of our anatomy due to its responsibility for connecting our brain to the rest of the body. Everything that passes through the neck is vital and relies heavily on proper function of the musculoskeletal system to protect and support these structures. Stress is stored in these muscles and can cause headaches, shoulder pain, and other damaging compensations. Sitting at a computer all day, looking down while running, whiplash, sleeping poorly, or sudden movements and changes in direction are also common causes of neck pain. Factors include muscle strain, ligament sprains, arthritis, spinal subluxations, pinched nerves, knots or adhesions, and countless other musculoskeletal complications. The pain is usually not only felt in the neck itself, but also into the base of the neck and the shoulders. Generally the pain can be categorized into two conditions: muscle strain or myofascial strain. Muscle strain can occur when there is an injury to the muscles of the neck, causing spasm of the cervical and upper back muscles. The strain may result from the physical stresses of everyday life, including poor posture, muscle tension from psychological stress, or poor sleeping habits. Typically symptoms include pain, stiffness, and tightness in the upper back or shoulder. Myofascial pain causes tight and tender areas of muscle that are sensitive to pressure. Myofascial pain in the neck can develop after trauma or with other medical …
I hate to write so much but I would like to provide a little of my background. I’ve been suffering from a non stop headache for over five years now. I am eighteen years old and my social and academic lives have been severely affected by this problem.
I was lucky enough (despite poor performance in high school do to my condition) to get into a pretty decent college, and I would like to pursue medicine. However my condition makes it incredibly hard to study, or do anything for that matter, including waking up in the morning, and even just thinking.
I have been to numerous doctors–family doctors, neurologists, an otolaryngologist, optometrists, dentists, I’ve gotten braces thinking my bite was the problem, I’ve tried night guards, I’ve even tried acupuncture–all to no avail. My condition remains exactly the same; it fluctuates through periods of being very slight to being very painful, but it is always there. I believe I sometimes get different types of headaches, sometimes migraines and sometimes tension, though I believe the type that is most associated with my main condition is a feeling of inflammation from right around my eyes traveling to the back of my head. It throbs in this area as I usually feel my pulse throughout my head.
It is very difficult for me to explain the nature of the pain (I’m sure the above explanation is confusing to many people), but that is because it is a unique condition that I believe no one else suffers from. I’ve been through countless phases of my own little experiments trying to find a cause within my posture, my diet, and even my way of thinking, all with no results. I am now at a point where I feel completely hopeless, and I’ve lost most of my drive to find a cure, as it appears there is none.
I am sorry to write so much, but I wanted to give a detailed explanation and hope that somebody would suggest something. My condition makes me very depressed, and I don’t really have anyone to talk about it with, because it being a condition that is not physically visible, nobody takes it seriously, and nobody seems to care, because they just see me as a regular person. No one understands and when I get depressed, I often contemplate suicide, though I am almost positive I’ll never go that route.
I’ve tried to give an adequate account of my situation and I beg anyone with the slightest idea to suggest whatever they can, please.
I’ve smoked so much weed, and it doesn’t do a damn thing. I’ve tried a number of natural remedies, including salvia, capsaicin, herbal teas, etc. Nothing.
I also got an MRI and a cat scan a few years ago, and they said I have a perfectly healthy brain. The problem started in February 2006, if I had a brain tumor, then wouldn’t I feel greater effects than chronic headaches by now? I don’t mean to be rude, I really don’t know.
Also, as I mentioned the problem started in Feb 2006. The actual starting point was when I went to see a neurologist (because I was always a sufferer of headaches from time to time prior to the chronic daily ones–I now realize it wasn’t worth going to a doctor for), he prescribed Topamax (migraine preventative meds). During the week he told me to take this medicine I had the headaches as I do now. I figured after I stopped taking the medicine they would stop, but they never did, and here I am with my condition.
Is it in anyway possible that Topamax, a migraine
Ran out of room:
Is it in anyway possible that Topamax, a migraine preventative medicine, could have caused my condition? I don’t see how this can be possible but I must ask.
Neck pain can be caused by a number of factors, including muscle strain, ligament sprains, arthritis, or a “pinched” nerve. Neck pain most successfully treated by KT Taping techniques include Cervical Strain, and Cervical Myofascial pain. Cervical strain Cervical muscle strain can occur when there is an injury to the muscles of the neck, causing spasm of the cervical and upper back muscles. Cervical strain may result from the physical stresses of everyday life, including poor posture, muscle tension from psychologic stress or poor sleeping habits. Typically, symptoms include pain, stiffness, and tightness in the upper back or shoulder, which may last for up to six weeks. Cervical Myofascial Pain Myofascial pain causes tight and tender areas of muscle that are sensitive to pressure. Myofascial pain in the neck can develop after trauma or with other medical conditions, such as psychologic stress, depression, or insomnia. KT Tape alleviates pain by providing support and increased circulation around the affected area allowing for a rapid recovery. Generally individuals will feel immediate support and pain relief upon taping.
I was bringing my newborn to the chiropractor for acid reflux. I read it was a safe treatment for that, and I had already done all the traditional treatments with no result. He has not improved, but I was ok with that. I just figured I try.
I mentioned I had been having shoulder pain so I asked if she could check it out. She did an adjustment. I have my next appointment today and I am thinking I should cancel. My shoulder feels worse and now I have a weird neck pain with turning. The pain travels up the back of my head and gives me a headache. Now after doing some research I read neck adjustment can give you a stroke! I know I am not having one but I have been really lightheaded for days. I am afraid to go back. She is the nicest doctor I have ever met so I don’t know how to handle this. Should I go and explain my concerns of just call and cancel. Please help!
just to be clear what she did with my son was not at all like what she did with me. She didn’t twist anything on him it almost looked more like a massage.
